Festival launches Encounters of the cultural kind

A programme of events have been announced for this year’s Encounters Festival.

The North Lanarkshire’s month long cultural experience is back for its second year, and there are plenty of events for all the family taking place throughout October.

Audiences of all ages can not only see shows, visit exhibitions and be inspired by authors, but they can get involved hands-on via workshops and activities – from poetry to pottery, and from films to family days - and allfestival events are completely free of charge.

To celebrate National Poetry Day come and join poetry lovers as they share some of their favourites with you, Encounters kicks off with Poachers Pot in Condorrat Library on October 3.

The presentation includes Harry Glass who has performed in the BBC2 Culture Show and members of Studio Arts Forum who meet in Cumbernauld Theatre.

There will be Creative Camping at Stepps and Kilsyth where participants can create an unusual site-specific ‘camp’ for library visitors to benefit from a quiet, contemplative and magical area to lose themselves in a good book. Cumbernauld Theatre also plays a part in Encounters hosting several great music events, A Song and A Sip, The Springsteen Sessions plus theatre shows for adults and children alike.

Other highlights to look out for are; The Hidden Story of The Kilsyth Weavers, Tiger Tale for children, Discovery Film Festival with Shorts for Wee Ones and Play in A Week, the October acting academy at Cumbernauld Theatre. Cumbernauld Library will have author talks from James Robertson and Alex Gray plus Freaky Fotos, a spooky Halloween session involving props and costume.

The Encounters programme can be picked up from your local library, or visit www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk/encounters for more or follow on Twitter @encountersnl and at Facebook.com/encountersnl.
