Fight to save YMCA unit goes on

A CAMPAIGN to save an accommodation complex for homeless youngsters is now underway – after Cumbernauld YMCA refused to hand the keys of the premises back to North Lanarkshire Council.

An online petition has been created to fight for the flatted properties in Tarbolton Road which house up to 100 vulnerable young people per year.

This has the backing of Scottish Nationalists councillors including Patrick Scott Hogg and Tom Johnston

At time of going to press, the petition had attracted a total of 700 signatures, but the council insists it has done nothing wrong.

Officials say they have no option but to reclaim the building, after arguing that it is no longer fit for purpose. Its next step will be to revamp the premises to accommodate homeless families.

And the council has also stressed that steps are already underway to re-house existing tenants.
