Fire crews tackle Newton Mearns tyre blaze

Firefighters were called out to Petterton Farm in Newton Mearns last night (Saturday, June 20) after black smoke was seen rising from the site.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) crews were sent to the scene to extinguish the fire near Patterton Station.

A SFRS spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 8.11pm on Saturday June 20 to reports of a well-developed fire in the open in Newton Mearns.

“Operations control mobilised three appliances to Patterton Farm where firefighters were met with a large quantity of tyres on fire.”

The spokesperson added that there were no casualties.

Smoke from the fire drifted over the nearby M77 motorway and police closed off the road to the station car park for a time as a safety precaution.
