Firefighters free driver from crash near Biggar

A woman was taken to hospital after being freed from her overturned car near Biggar yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters rescued a motorist from the which left the road and plunged down an embankment.

They reached the scene of the crash on the A702 in Biggar four minutes after being mobilised in response to a 999 call made shortly before 3:15pm on Wednesday.

Appliances from Biggar and Lanark fire stations attended the incident, with the crews working alongside ambulance personnel treating the casualty and police officers who controlled traffic to ensure the safety of everyone at the scene.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service crews used hydraulic rescue equipment to enable paramedics to reach the woman, who was trapped within the upside-down vehicle around three metres (10ft) from the roadway.

The space they created allowed her to be placed on a board and safely lifted clear of the stricken vehicle.

After being released from the car the motorist was taken by ambulance to Wishaw General Hospital for a precautionary check-up.
