Fireman fights for charity

However, according to Clarkston firefighter Iain Stoddart, running 26 miles in April will be one of the hardest things he has ever had to do.

“It will definitely be my first and last marathon,” the 33-year-old told The Extra. “The time and dedication required in training is incredible.

“It will all be worth it in the end, especially considering it’s all for a good cause. However hard the training is, that is in the back of my mind.”

The Netherlee man is running to raise money for The Firefighters Charity and his total is already well above £3,000, thanks to the support of family, friends and local businesses.

With the help of his colleagues, Iain organised a charity car wash and a fundraiser at Stamperland social club — which went some way towards swelling his impressive tally.

The charity aims to enhance the quality of life for serving and retired firefighters, fire personnel and their families by providing treatment and support services where needed.

Iain, who has been a firefighter for more than 12 years, found himself in need of the charity’s help and support when a back injury sidelined him from duty.

He added: “They were incredible to me and when I was there, I had a chance to see first hand the hard work they put in and how many people truly rely on their support.

“The charity relies on people like myself to be able to continue their good work and it is really important that people continue to support them in this way.”

Local businesses have rallied round Iain, with Loafers, Bon Appetito, Dominos, Shahed’s Tandoori, Mings Express, Dining In with Pearl India and many more offering raffle prizes and food for his fundraising event.

“The support has been out of this world,” Iain said. “It’s amazing how keen people are to help you. I have been overwhelmed with it.”
