Fit for purpose

The 25-year-old fitness expert came out on top at the regional finals of the 2012 Prince’s Trust Youth Business Scotland ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’ Award.

He was presented with a £1,000 cash prize and will now go forward to the national final which will take place in Glasgow’s City Chambers on November 13.

And next month his company Micro Fitness will give the local economy a boost when he takes on six apprentices at his office in Town Centre in a deal organised by North Lanarkshire’s Working.

Steve who hails from Kildrum approached Youth Business Scotland at the end of 2009 for a Market Test Grant, then secured a loan from Youth Business Scotland and launched Micro Fitness in August 2010 with the sole purpose of providing a mobile gym to schools as an after school club.

He quickly identified a greater potential to develop his company into a full comprehensive fitness firm targeting schools, youth groups, private parties and commercial organisations while extending his services to offer yoga, zumba, martial arts, educational tutorials, box fit, and glee club.

He grew up client list to include 33 schools and organisations in his first year and more than 120 in his second year, covering 14 councils across Scotland.

He now employs ten part-time staff and eight sub-contract instructors and this summer introduced a summer school initiative in Cumbernauld providing affordable day care for parents as well as an active fund environment.

Steven said: “We had around 130 children every week for the six weeks of the summer holidays at Cornerstone House: it was a great response and immediately made us consider running a similar event during the October holidays and then probably Easter as well.”

Steven is very aware of the benefits of social media and is looking to create a You Tube channel to promote his company and the services it offers.
