Five years for Cumbernauld gun man

A MAN who sparked a major incident after walking into a police station armed with a sawn-off shotgun was jailed for five years today (Tuesday, September 18).

Michael Stuart (54) had taken a taxi to Cumbernauld Police Office and told a sergeant that he wanted them to shoot him on February 12.

A judge told Michael Stuart that officers who were initially involved “must have feared for their lives” and said they had demonstrated commendable presence of mind.

Lord Jones told Stuart: “You have pled guilty to a number of very serious offences. The incident in Cumbernauld Police Office lasted for over two and a half hours.”

The judge pointed out that the incident had caused major disruption to the surrounding area with roads closed, members of the public advised to stay indoors and emergency services and a police helicopter put on standby.

Firearms officers were also dispatched to the Lanarkshire police station after an emergency was signalled.
