Food for thought - kitchen ‘caddies’ on the way to help recycle grub

A FOOD recycling scheme is hoping to boost jobs and the environment.

North Lanarkshire Council plans to gradually introduce food waste collections by the end of 2012.

The local authority says the scheme will create 36 full-time jobs and help it achieve its Scottish Government recycling targets.

Councillor Helen McKenna, convener of the council’s environmental services committee, said: “We need to make sure we’re exploring every possible means of recycling.”

Residents will be given small kitchen caddies, a larger outdoor caddy and biodegradable cornstarch bags to allow them to recycle and store their food waste.

The larger caddies will be picked up by the council’s new fleet of 10 food waste collection vehicles on a weekly basis.

The council recycled almost 44 per cent of its household waste during 2010-11, up nearly four per cent on the Scottish Government’s target of 40 per cent by 2011.
