Foundry challenge reaches the other side of the world

A global search to track down products of Kirkintilloch’s industrial past has marked its first birthday with its most far-flung find.

Herald reader Danny McFadden launched his ‘Foundry Challenge’ in May 2014.

Since then he’s been inundated with hundred of examples of metalwork from the town - including the iconic red telephone boxes made by the Lion Foundry.

On the anniversary of launching the hunt Danny was delighted to receive news of one of the telephone boxes in Aukland, New Zealand.

Danny said: “It is 11,129 miles from Kirkintilloch and the current winner of ‘The Furthest Away’ item.

“I just don’t believe that within only a year we’d have found a Kirkintilloch Lion Foundry kiosk literally on the other side of the world from us. This one will be difficult to beat, but not impossible due to Commonwealth connections in that part of the world.

Other recent finds include phone boxes in Liverpool’s legendary Cavern Club and in Sir Elton John’s garden, window panels in China and a bandstand in Chile

Danny added: “I look forward to finding more and want to thank those who have contributed so far. I invite others to join the challenge or at least have a look and keep it in the back of their minds.”
