Fourth betting shop bid for Carluke High Street

LOCALS have been urged to back Carluke's beleagured High Street — just as an application for a FOURTH bookmakers in the town centre was submitted.

William Hill lodged plans with South Lanarkshire Council last week to move into 60 to 62 High Street, formerly Brooks' menswear store.

If successful it would mean four bookies in one street, as Coral and two Ladbrokes offices already operate there.

Carluke Community Council chairman Alistair Mackie believes the town must get behind the High Street and businesses which occupy it.

He said: "We have known that the application from William Hill has been on the cards. It doesn't present a very good image of Carluke to have four book-makers in one street.

"But we have to keep promoting our local businesses who are there and get the community behind the High Street.

"We have to keep local businesses alive, encourage people to invest and come into Carluke to take over the shops which are currently lying empty."
