Friendly Cumbernauld and Kilsyth folk sign up to become Glasgow 2014 homestay hosts

Hospitable locals are already providing an alternative to sky-high hotel rates by agreeing to open their homes to games visitors.

They have got on board with a scheme we flagged up last month which is run by the More Than Gold organisation.

The international scheme sources host families for visitors to giant sporting tournaments and has a Christian slant. However, you do not need to be a Christian to participate.

A spokesman said: “We are delighted at the response by people wanting to be hosts for the games, however,we are still needing many more.

Cumbernauld and Kilsyth are ideal places for being a Host as these are great locations with good transport links to Glasgow and the Games venues,” she added.

Meanwhile it emerges that the minister from Kildrum Parish Church is one of those who has signed up to the scheme.

Reverend Elinor Gordon was cleared for participation after representatives from More Than Gold visited the manse. They inspected the premises which has a couple of spare rooms and decided that these would be a good fit for guests who may be from the UK or overseas.

The minister said: “I heard all about this scheme while I was at the General Assembly and I thought it was very interesting.

“I’m really looking forward to it. I think that it will be good fun. I’m looking forward to hearing all the chat when they come home at night!’’ she added.
