From hairdressers to bus driver - and still checking her mirrors

A hairdresser from Bishopbriggs has had a change of direction after more than 20 years in the salon - swapping the curling tongs for the drivers seat on the bus.

Donna Scullion took a leap of faith and following a rigorous training scheme has just qualified as a Glasgow bus driver with First Glasgow.

The 48-year-old said: “People do find it a bit unusual but there’s one thing both jobs have in common – you need to check your mirrors all the time!”

Donna was speaking as First Glasgow announced plans for a Recruitment Open Day at its Caledonia and Blantyre depots on Saturday, October 29.

Donna said: “After 20 years in hairdressing I wanted to do something different. I enjoy driving and I wanted to take myself out of my comfort zone and learn something new.

“My friends were a bit shocked when I told them what I was doing as they said I didn’t look like

their idea of a ‘typical’ bus driver, with my hair and my nails done, but there is a real mix of people in this job and it’s not the stereotypical image.”

Donna said the training has been a challenge but worthwhile. She added: “You have to go through a

number of stages but the training is brilliant. It fills you full of confidence and I’m really looking forward to being out on the road.

“My experience working with the public is one of the things that I believe will work in my favour

doing this job.”

The First Glasgow Open Day will take place from 10am until 2pm on Saturday (October 29) at

Caledonia Depot, 100 Cathcart Road, Glasgow.
