Gaelic language plan takes shape

A FOUR year plan to develop Gaelic in Glasgow has been approved by the council’s executive committee.

The Gaelic Language Plan 2013-2017 follows consultation with Gaelic organisations, learners, teachers, community groups and arms-length organisations.

The move is a bid to meet national obligations as part of the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005 — and includes plans for a new school in Pollokshields, courtesy of an £800,000 Scottish government investment.

Bailie Aileen Colleran, executive member for communities, said:“We will continue to work with the Gaelic community to make sure we deliver action appropriate for the needs of the city.”

This year saw the highest P1 intake at the current facility, in Finnieston, by any Gaelic Medium Education school — making Glasgow the third largest provider of education through Gaelic at nursery and primary level.
