The local club immediately offered to pay for a replica of the former star’s treasured honour which was ripped from his neck in Spain by a street thug.

Alex (65), who lives in Kirkintilloch with wife Christine, had worn the medal, which he won during Rangers’ historic 1972 win over Dynamo Moscow in Barcelona, on a gold chain for the past 40 years.

He was ecstatic when KRSC offered to donate £900 from funds for a replica.

Alex, made Honorary President of the supporters club in 1970, said: “The medal was a big part of me. The 1972 Cup Winners Cup was a special moment. I was heartbroken when it was stolen.

“A lot of people got pleasure from the medal, not just me. I would take it to functions at Ibrox and the
children liked to get their photo taken with it.

“I can’t thank Kirkintilloch Rangers Supporters Club enough. It means the world to me to get this new medal.”

The club contaced UEFA, and former teammate Sandy Jardine presented Alex, who made more than 500 appearances during his time with Rangers, with the replacement medal.

David Watson, President of KRSC, said: “We were delighted to be allowed to pay for Alex’s replica medal. We knew how much it meant to him.”
