‘Get on your bike’ for Bike Week

Local MP Jo Swinson is encouraging people to take part in some cycling events in the area to mark national Bike Week from June 14 to 22.

There will be intermediate mountain biking at Milngavie and Bearsden Sports Club on June 17 and ‘Canals Galore’ will start at Bishopbriggs Leisure Centre and take in an 11 mile cycle ride around Kirkintilloch on June 22.

This year’s Bike Week aims to encourage ‘everyday cycling for everyone’. Demonstrating the positive social, health and environmental impact of cycling, a number of events up and down the country will show how cycling can be an enjoyable activity with real practical benefits.

Ms Swinson said: “Cycling is a fun and healthy activity that can be enjoyed by many, and I encourage people to go along to one of the excellent local events taking place during national Bike Week.

“There are significant health benefits to getting children out and about on their bikes, and I have seen recently how passionate young local people are about cycling. On a visit to East Dunbartonshire’s Cycle Co-op in Bishopbriggs, I was impressed by the enthusiasm of the young cyclists and their skill on the new indoor ramps.

“So this Bike Week why not consider switching a journey from car to bicycle? Cycling is cheaper, healthier and greener and I hope this week will motivate more people to get on their bike and recognise the benefits of cycling.”
