Get on your bike to help fund a new state-of-the-art hospice

New Year’s resolutions can be hard to keep, but raising money for charity and getting fit can be a powerful motivator in keeping them.

From fun runs to cycle and hillwalking routes, a number of energetic, endorphin-boosting events organised in 2016 by the Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow can do more than boost your fitness levels.

By taking part in one of these events you are helping patients and families who face extremely tough challenges every day.

Starting from Brodick, the Arran Cycle Challenge on June 4 will give participants the option of either following a 55-mile circular route around the island or a 72-mile figure of eight course across the middle which includes a climb up the String Road that is not for the faint-hearted.

Or maybe the Three Lochs Way on June 11 is more your thing. It is a 34-mile walk taking in some of Scotland’s most stunning scenery.

Leaving from Balloch, the route follows the breathtaking surroundings of Loch Long, Gareloch and Loch Lomond before finishing in Inveruglas.

Teams of four to 10 walkers, that could be made up of family, friends of colleagues, will be aiming to complete the challenge within a 14-hour period.

Fundraising continues to raise the £21 million needed to build a brand new hospice on a site at Bellahouston Park gifted by Glasgow City Council, with the foundations due to go down in June next year.

The hospice is beginning to outgrow its building in Carlton Place and is ready to move to a purpose-built, bigger and more modern site, that will include young people in its care plan for the first time.

The new premises will bring world-class palliative care to the people of Glasgow, offering compassionate care to those who need it, and will have beautiful outdoor spaces providing privacy to patients and their families, as well as staff, for quiet contemplation.

Rhona Baillie, chief executive of the Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, said: “Our new hospice will be a major step forward in the provision of palliative care in Glasgow.”
