Girl Guides go wild for Commonwealth badge

Girls from the 259th Glasgow Guides have earned their stripes at a wild weekend at Blair Drummond Safari.

The Pollokshields troupe sent seven of their intrepid young explorers to the park to earn their Commonwealth Games badge — specially designed to promote the upcoming event.

The guides mucked in alongside keepers in looking after all the animals, lemurs to llamas, giraffes to goats and meerkats to mongoose.

The education department taught the girls about conservation issues, and the youngsters even set about building some bug houses and digging up residents for a new worm farm.

Education officer Phoebe Stewart said: “The guides were brilliant. They were really engaged with conservation issues related to some of our favourite species in the park.

“We hope they will go on and insprire others to care for wildlife.”

Trip organisers and 259th assistant leader Robyn Burdge added: “The trip was a great chance for the girls to get away and they can’t wait to share their learning with the others when we return after Easter.”
