Girls football team nets top SFA award

The girls football team, based in Chryston, received the grading after being recognised as an ambitious club with coaches who aim high for the youngsters.

Coach, Debbie Horn, said: “We encourage all our girls to be confident young players, a simple thumbs up, a clap or well done can make all the difference.

“Young people don’t learn as quickly when the focus is on winning at all costs, young people need to feel appreciated regardless of their ability.”

This style of coaching has been a hit with the kids, who are signing up in their droves to join the team. They are now seeking a new coach to help them out with the high level of demand.

The grading from the Scottish Football Association means that they will receive additional support and training from experts in the sport.

Bedlay player, Mairin, (8) said: “I love football because it is getting me fit and I get to meet lots of new girls that I really like and we all congratulate each other when we score.

“The coaches make training fun and I am learning new skills all the time which is making me a better player. The coaches can have a laugh with us and it can be fun when we sometimes play against the coaches.”

Debbie said that fun and encouragement are important, particularly for younger children and social interaction on teams like Bedlay can build their confidence.
