Glasgow City Council gives people online voice

Residents, organisations and businesses are being urged to help bring about “positive change” in Glasgow by making use of the new portal.

The move was recommended in a review of the petitions system that led to other changes to the overall process.

Most notably, council decisions can now be challenged after six months rather than 12 months, as was the case under the previous arrangements.

A council spokesman said: “The new system has been launched to make the council’s public petitions and general purposes policy development committee as accessible as possible for potential petitioners.

“Just 25 signatures of support are required to allow councillors to consider a petition .

“It is hoped the new system will encourage people in Glasgow to get more involved in the democratic process.”

Committee chair Frank Docherty called the move a valuable opportunity for people to take action.

Councillor Docherty said: “I have little doubt there will be a million and one ideas out there about what could be done to improve the city.

“This should make it much easier for people to take action about the things that matter to them.”
