Gold tickets: 2014 ballot results revealed

SPORTS fans across Scotland and beyond found out if their applications for Glasgow 2014 tickets were successful this week.

Commonwealth Games organisers have begun informing people who had applied during the four-week ballot window by email or post.

There were 2.3 million requests for up to one million tickets — and a quick poll on Facebook and Twitter showed that many people were left disappointed.

Extra Facebook follower Dorothy Stuart and and Twitter user @theshooglypeg received none of the tickets they wanted, and @allig2411 added: “Got nothing — and I didn’t even apply for finals or opening/closing ceremonies.”

Val Carruthers questioned the fairness of the ballot, commenting: “I applied for tickets the same day as my partner and he ended up getting half of what he requested, yet I got none. And another friend received all his tickets!”

According to organisers, track cycling proved particularly popular, with 25 times more requests than tickets available — there were also more than 100,000 applications made for the 100 metres men’s final at Hampden.

Ty Speer, Glasgow 2014 deputy chief executive, said: “The overwhelming enthusiasm demonstrated by hundreds of thousands of people already guarantees tremendous crowds across the board for Commonwealth
athletes.”

And there is hope yet for sports fans without a golden ticket, as people who have already applied will be given first chance on remaining tickets in an exclusive sale period, before the rest go on general sale in late October.
