Good Causes reach another milestone money mark

It’s another milestone moment for East Renfrewshire Good Causes, which has now helped more than 1,200 people to the tune of £200,000.

The charity, started in 2007 following a life-saving double transplant for founder Russell Macmillan, helps set up odd jobs and good deeds for the area’s most vulnerable.

Recent achievements include funding a baby monitor to help a teenage carer to look after a sibling in need of a heart and a parent in need of a kidney, as well as a bed for a single parent escaping domestic abuse.

Russell told The Extra: “I could never have imagined that those two organs would have lived on inside me and gone on to help so many people.

“It really is a miracle, and I do hope the sadly deceased organ donor is looking down, approving the work that has been done.”

ERGC’s work relies on knowledge from frontline workers, as well as the generosity of neighbours lending a helping hand over and above care provided by local and national authorities.

It’s a model that Russell believes could be rolled out to other areas. He added: “Every community should have one of these, and I wonder which political parties might think about adopting this concept as a party policy to roll out elsewhere and campaign on.

“We’ve just passed the milestone of giving out £200,000, repaying three times the cost to the NHS of my operation.

“You hear a lot of talk about community coming together, but this is a way of doing it in a modern world.”
