Good Samaritan attacked in street as he tries to help woman

A man was seriously assaulted in a Kirkintilloch street at the weekend as he tried to help a woman who was being attacked.

The 51-year-old man was repeatedly kicked and punched by two thugs outside Smiths Hotel in David Donnelly Place around 2am on Saturday.

Police said he was trying to assist a woman being assaulted by one of them.

His attackers then dragged him along the road before both men and the woman ran off.

The injured man was taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary and treated for serious facial injuries before being released.

Officers said there were a number of people in the vicinity at the time of the incident and are appealing for witnesses.

One of the victims assailants has been described as white, around 25-30 years-old, with dark hair and wearing a white shirt and dark trousers. The other has been described as around the same age, wearing a dark suit jacket and trousers.

The woman the assault victim tried to help is white, tall, of thin build, with long brown hair. She was wearing a cream-coloured fur body warmer.

Detective Constable Alyson Paton at Kirkintilloch CID said: “This was an extremely violent and sustained attack on a man who was only trying to assist a woman who was being assaulted.

“We know there were a number of people nearby who either witnessed this incident or tried to intervene. I urge any of these people who haven’t already spoken to police to contact police immediately.”
