Both will hammer home the Better Together message in what promises to be both a high profile and highly charged rally.

And the event will be chaired by Mr Brown’s fellow MP Gregg McClymont.

The MP who has known Mr Brown for some time is believed to have been instrumental in persuading him to come to Cumbernauld to address No Thanks campaigners.

Mr McClymont confirmed: “I’m delighted that Gordon Brown has accepted my invitation to speak in Cumbernauld. “This is a very special event. It’s not every day that a former prime minister like Gordon Brown comes to town.”

“As chancellor and then prime minister Gordon Brown worked tirelessly to make Scotland and Britain a fairer place.

“I am very much looking forward to hearing him make the positive case as to why Scots should be saying no thanks in September,” he added.

Although we can confirm that the event begins this Sunday at 6.45pm, organisers have refused to confirm the exact location of the centrally located venue.

It’s being stressed that this is for security reasons.

Although this is not a public meeting in the strictest sense, non-Labour party members are welcome to attend by pre-arrangement.

This will involve emailing Mr McClymont to secure admission.
