Gordon Brown visits New Lanark

FORMER Prime Minister Gordon Brown surprised - and delighted - the public in equal measure when he visited the New Lanark Food and Gift Fair on Monday.

And there was a genuine welcome for him from one of the first people he met, Arthur Bell, Chairman of New Lanark Trust, as they briefly remembered their days as friends at Edinburgh University.

“We were chums,” said Arthur. “Gordon was on the student newspaper with me and he later became chairman of the publications board. They published a book, the Complete Edinburgh Pub Guide, which I wrote.”
