Greggs staff celebrate 30 years in Cumbernauld

IT was party time at Greggs as the popular bakery in Teviot Walk celebrated its 30th birthday.

Regular customers joined with staff at the hot food hot spot to toast the landmark anniversary of the shop, which has remained a constant feature of the Cumbernauld Shopping Centre since shortly after it was opened.

Manager Barbara Buchanan was on hand to offer customers a slice of birthday cake last Friday, June 3, and said the success of the shop was down to the relationship between staff and customers.

She said: “I’ve worked in the shop for eight years in total and I love it.

“We feel like we are a traditional bakers and I’d say we have the most regular customers.

“We have a great relationship with the people who come in here and we always try to help.

“It’s a kind of back to basics atmosphere in here. We come in to work and just love to chat to the customers and help them start their day with a coffee or some food, and for the shop to have done that for the last 30 years is really something special.”

One regular customer, Helen Love, has been coming to Greggs for 20 years, something she only realised last Friday at the celebrations.

Helen said: “No matter where I’ve worked in Cumbernauld I’ve always come here for my coffee in the morning.

“They always have my latte ready in the morning and that gets me started. The staff are great.”

Another Greggs fan, Patrick Gallagher from Abronhill, said: “The staff are excellent and the products are excellent. My favourite treat is the yum yums and I’ve got plenty of grandchildren, so the steak bakes and sausage rolls go down well with my family. I love it so much I tried to get a job here as a sweeper!”

Shopping Centre manager Robert Barr added: “Greggs have been a stalwart and important retailer of Cumbernauld Shopping Centre since June, 1981 and we wish them every success in the future.”
