Despite it not being the best of summers weather-wise, entries kept coming in from talented readers across the towns and villages.

There are some lovely gardens across the district and the judges had a hard task choosing the winners.

Taking first place for the second year running is Janice Campbell, from Etive Crescent in Bishopbriggs.

Janice has won a £50 voucher to spend at Caulders Garden Centre and a garden spade.

She said: “I was quite surprised to win again, but really chuffed. I’ve done most of the work that needs to be done in the garden and I spend once a week in there. My project now is to get the bit at the back made into a kind of wildlife garden.”

Second place goes to Kenny Quinn, of Meiklehill Avenue in Kirkintilloch.

Kenny, who was third in last year’s competition, receives a £30 voucher for Caulders.

He said: “I’m really chuffed. I’m in the garden most days and grow a lot of fruit and veg, including carrots, beetroot, strawberries and apples.”

In third place is Rosalind Winks, of Norfolk Crescent in Bishopbriggs, who wins a £20 voucher for Caulders.

As in previous years, the Herald ran the competition in conjunction with the experts at Caulders Garden Centre, in Kilsyth Road, Kirkintilloch, and Kirkintilloch Horticultural Society.

Competition judge Alistaire Gilchrist said: “Despite the weather there are people who managed to produce attractive gardens, particularly the ones that have fruit and veg in them. I enjoyed seeing them.”

Errol Burchell, president of Kirkintilloch Horticultural Society added: “I was very impressed with the number of entries and the quality of gardens in view of the extremely poor summer.”
