Guiding light receives top award for service

A dedicated Girlguiding volunteer has been presented with the highest award possible with the organisation for outstanding service to guiding.

Pat Marwick, from Bishopbriggs, was delighted to receive the Laurel Award.

It celebrates Pat’s 44 years as a leader with Girlguiding UK and was presented by the Scottish chief commissioner, Sue Walker.

The mum said: “I’m chuffed to bits to receive the award. It was a total surprise. I knew when some of the high head ones came in the door that something was going on.

“My husband Bill knew about it.

“I love volunteering with Girlguiding UK, it gets in your blood. One of the best bits of the job is helping younger girls and women to achieve their potential.”

Pat was a brownie and a guide and was inspired to volunteer as a Tawny Owl and Brown Owl.

She has had a number of positions with Girlguiding UK, including being deputy Scottish chief commissioner for five years.

Pat is now chairperson of a working group at Netherurd training centre near Peebles and is county president for North Lanarkshire.

Her other honours include the Scottish chief commissioners award.
