Hats off to Ella - the lady who made millinery marvellous

A well known Muirend shop will be closed for the day on Friday, because relatives and friends of the late Ella Bulloch will be attending her funeral in Grantown-on-Spey.

best known as a past-mistress at the art of millinery she passed away on January 2, just three weeks before her 105th birthday.

Her daughter-in-law, Carol Bulloch, said: “Ella’s shop ‘Ella Bulloch’ in Muirend is an institution known by generations in Glasgow and across the country.

“I posted an article on the shop Facebook page about her passing and have been overwhelmed by the wonderful comments.

“I know many people who read the Extra will be very interested to hear the news too”.

The photograph of Ella, above - seen sporting a typically classic hat creation - was taken at the wedding of her grand-daughter Lorna, when, says Carol, “Ella was an incredible, beautiful 96 years old”.

She added: “We, her family, staff and friends - and generations of her customers - will miss Ella’s sense of fun, great style and total enthusiasm for life.

“Ella established her shop in its current location at 461 Clarkston Road in 1964.

“It is Glasgow’s longest established hat shop and Ella worked here until she was an amazing 99 years old!

“Ella’s wonderful legacy will live on as the business which was her lifelong passion - selling hats - will continue in her shop.

“All who knew her will understand that Ella would not have it any other way!”
