Have your say on derelict buildings in Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs

The Herald put out a plea on Facebook to find the eyesore locations which are lying derelict and unused in local communities.

One of the most prominent in Kirkintilloch is the old Co-op building in Townhead - a burnt-out shell for almost six years.

It has been derelict since a blaze in February 2007, leading to numerous complaints from residents and business owners that the building is a blight on the town.

The owners have previously told the Herald they hope to develop the property.

Other ‘eyesore’ buildings put forward include the old BP garage in Bishopbriggs and The Triangle, also in Bishopbriggs.

Robert McFadden came up with another suggestion . . . for the future.

He said: “Tom Johnston House - I’m six months early, but you know it’s coming.

“I’ve lived in Kirkintilloch all my life and I’ve never seen the town in such a state of disrepair. If the owners have no interest in maintaining or filling properties then compulsory purchase the property and change the use.

“The infrastructure is there, the roads are built - demolish the whole of Cowgate and build a proper shopping centre, fix the rates appropriate for a small town and the big names would move in.

“Cut all the red tape. Bishopbriggs Retail Park is a runaway success, because the paying public like shopping in decent stores.”

nBoarded Up Britain is a website aiming to document empty buildings in Britain.

Members of the public are being encouraged to flag up derelict properties in their area to help raise awareness in the hope that something will be done and buildings can be transformed into affordable properties.
