Sarah Taggart and Katrina Buckley are organising a quiz night in Blackwood to raise funds.

“We got together on Sunday as a reaction to the harrowing images of children washed up in the Mediterranean sea at the weekend,” said Sarah.

“As mothers of young children ourselves we can’t imagine the decision these Syrian mothers and fathers had to take to pack their babies onto cramped fishing boats in the dead of night, just for a chance of survival.

“We felt a need to do something - however small - to raise awareness and some much needed funds.

“Owing to the urgency of the crisis we have organised a 90s Quiz Night at Blackwood Victoria Bowling Club on Friday September 11 with doors open at 7pm for 7.30pm start.

“Teams of up to six are invited and we’re asking £5 per head.

“We are assuring people a great night with lots of prizes and great fun.

“We have a Facebook Page and can be contacted through that or via [email protected] for any enquires.

“We are urging the community to come out on the night and in the words of JFK ‘One person can make a difference, and everyone should try’.”

Around 2500 migrants are thought to have drowned this year alone, and at the weekend two migrant boats carrying 500 people capsized off Libya’s coast. At least 200 people, including children, are feared dead.

Sarah and Katrina have set up a Just Giving web page, and are aiming to raise £500 for Save the Children.
