Help make it a special Christmas for local youngsters

THE Herald’s army of readers have been asked to help deliver Christmas cheer to hundreds of local children who are facing difficult times this festive season.

We’ve teamed up with The Regent Shopping Centre and East Dunbartonshire Council in a bid to make sure no child in Kirkintilloch, Bishopbriggs and the surrounding villages wakes up on December 25 without a gift.

It’s easy to get involved. All you have to do is buy a gift for a child and drop it in the special parcel box located in the Regent Centre. Alternatively you can hand it into the Herald office in Townhead.

Herald editor Jim Holland said: “As parents we always try to give our children a great Christmas and many of us will go the extra mile to get that special gift they have been talking about for months.

“Sadly, for some children, Christmas Day will be just like any other and hopes and dreams of a special gift from Santa will turn to disappointment.

“There will be many varied reasons and circumstances for this. That’s why the Herald is backing this appeal.

“These are difficult times financially for many families, but if you are in a position where you can buy a gift, no matter how small, and donate it to the appeal, then you can be sure it will go to a local youngster and will help make Christmas that little bit special.”

Gifts deposited in the special parcel box will be collected each day by East Dunbartonshire Social Work Department.

And the social work team will decide where the gifts go and who gets them.

If you’re donating a gift don’t worry about wrapping it up. All gifts will be allocated to either a boy or girl, with close attention paid to the recommended age.

Councillor Michael O’Donnell, convener of social work, said: “Last year’s appeal was a great success and I would like to thank everyone that very generously donated a present.

“We all know that Christmas is a time for giving, so if you are able to, please extend the season of good will beyond family and friends and donate a present – your kindness can make Christmas special for children that are less fortunate than others.”
