Heritage campaign for Craigie Hall

The application to divide Craigie Hall — which neighbours the House for an Art Lover in Dumbreck — into flats was submitted to Glasgow city council by a private owner.

Conservation group Pollokshields Heritage has spoken out against the proposal.

Chair Niall Murphy has written a letter to councillors, which reads: “Having witnessed the disastrous fire at the Glasgow School of Art, Pollokshields Heritage is saddened to report that Glasgow is facing the possible disassembly of another key Mackintosh interior.”

The owner faces a dry rot problem which has spread behind the house’s Mackintosh-designed organ and has, according to Pollokshields Heritage, offered to donate the instrument to a museum.

However, the group chair argues: “Perhaps it would be more straightforward to tackle the dry rot and leave the organ in its original setting where it can be best appreciated as Mackintosh intended it to be?”

Joining the campaign is Sharon Macdonald, who has collection 183 signatures in an online petition — the Shawlands resident told The Extra: “I’m keen for people to know that this building is here, on their doorstep, and that there’s a chance of it being lost.

“Ideally, I think the house should be redone sympathetically. It would be nice to see it opened to the public on Doors Open Day again, so that others could enjoy it as it was meant to look.”
