Heroic effort raises £330,000 for a new museum for Biggar

AS the deadline approaches, Biggar and the surrounding areas have raised £330,000 of the £380,000 needed to buy Stephens Garage for the new museum project.“It is going pretty well,” said Museum Trust chairman James Dawnay.

“It is something of a heroic effort given the size of the community we are trying to raise the money from.

“I think we are getting there but we are not quite there.

“But there is a tremendous level of activity within the town generally.

“Everyone is enormously supportive – there is hardly anything happening in the town which is not supporting the museum.

“It has become a proper community effort by everyone, which is great.”

Biggar Museum Trust wants to buy the Stephens Garage complex as a replacement for two of its existing museums, Moat Park and Gladstone Court. Founded by Brian Lambie some 40 years ago, they are now at the end of their lives, with the buildings deteriorating every year.

Recent donations have included a cheque from the Bridge Club, presented to Trustee Ann Matheson.
