High turnout for community council elections

ALL 10 of East Renfrewshire’s community councils are to be re-established following the recent election, as membership across the board increased by 17 per cent.

Each of the 10 area councils received more than the minimum number of nominations on August 1, and so each community council will reform in September, when monthly meetings resume.

The councils are Barrhead, Busby, Clarkston, Eaglesham and Waterfoot, Giffnock, Neilston, Netherlee and Stamperland, Newton Mearns, Thornliebank and Uplawmoor.

Convener for community safety and services, councillor Mary Montague, said: “Thank you, congratulations and welcome to everyone who has been nominated by their fellow residents to serve on our community councils.

“It demonstrates just how committed many of our residents are to working for the benefit of our communities — I am sure they will make a real difference for their areas.”

Newton Mearns community council meets on Monday (August 12), at 7pm — with a change of venue to the Osprey, Stewarton Road.

Residents are invited to join community councillors for the last meeting before the AGM at 6pm, for a bite to eat.
