Hitting the road to spread the word on radical bins shake-up

Presentations, roadshows and brochures are in the pipeline.

The radical new plans will see food waste collected weekly with all other refuse uplifted every fortnight.

As of April next year, residents will have four bins and a food waste ‘caddy’ - a bucket with a hinged lid that locks so that it is vermin proof.

The current recycling boxes will be replaced with bins. There will also be the usual bins for general waste and garden waste.

The new scheme has been given a budget of £1.5million for new bins and £244,000 to pay for “promotion” and “awareness”.

A communication and engagement strategy to inform residents of the changes was agreed by councillors at last week’s development and infrastructure committee.

Community councils and residents’ and tenants’ associations will be invited to meetings at the start of the year to hear presentations on the new scheme.

Brochures will be distributed to households in January and environmental roadshows will take place in January and February.

Calendars will be sent to all households (prior to the start of the first garden waste collection for 2013).
