Homes plan back in long grass

The news will be welcomed by residents in Clyde Avenue who are opposed to the development, but it’s a blow for local groups who were set to use money generated from the project to upgrade nearby Wooddean Park.

Cala Management Limited was given planning permission in March to build on the Bothwellbank Farm fields above the River Clyde.

South Lanarkshire Council approved the plans despite objections from nearby residents. They were angry that access to the new homes was to be from Clyde Avenue and said the area couldn’t cope with the increased traffic.

There were also fears that the level of on-street parking on Clyde Avenue would hinder emergency services vehicles trying to get access if called to the new estate.

Due to the length of time the plans had been under consideration, the council gave Cala just six months to get work started.

That was unlikely to happen because negotiations with the landowner have stalled.

This week a spokesman for the builders said Cala “will no longer be developing the site”, adding: “Cala was keen to progress matters, but was timed out of the deal.”
