Households urged to recycle more

The council analysed the contents of 600 random bins in the area earlier this year. The local authority said that, while residents are among the best recyclers in Scotland, 63 per cent of the average bin still contains items which could have been recycled.

Councillor Ashay Ghai, depute leader of the vouncil and convenor of neighbourhood services, said: “Our recycling figures are high – amongst the highest in Scotland, but this survey reveals we have an opportunity to do even better.

“As well as the obvious environmental benefits more recycling would bring, it could save the council up to £450,000 in taxes and fees each year if these items were to be recycled instead of being sent to landfill.

“As well as all cooked and uncooked food, people can also place such things as bones, dog food, tea bags and coffee grounds in their kitchen caddy.

“We are happy to supply more recycling bins and food caddies to anyone who wants one.”

On average, rubbish bins contained 37 per cent of general waste, 32 per cent of food and 10 per cent of paper and card.

There was also six per cent of textiles, four per cent of glass, while cans and aerosols made up four per cent, as did garden waste, and there was three per cent of plastic.
