People of all ages gathered to see her arrive, and she was welcomed by the Lord Lieutenant Mr Mushtaq Ahmad then escorted into the museum by Mr James Dawnay.

He chairs Biggar Museum Trust, the dedicated group of volunteers who have managed to build the new £2.2 million museum on a derelict garage site on Biggar High Street.

The state-of-the-art museum replaces Gladstone Court and the former Moat Park, which the Princess also opened 27 years ago.

Inside, the Princess met some of the donors who had backed the community project, those involved in building it, and the Trustees, then she enjoyed a tour of the exhibits.

Back outside she unveiled a plaque to commemorate the opening then, instead of heading back to her car, the Princes Royal took time to meet many of the families who had waited outside.
