Humbling experience for Lanark pupils on trip to Auschwitz

FORTY-ONE Lanark Grammar students and four staff left in the dark earlier this autumn to travel to Edinburgh Airport for the 6.30am flight to Krakow, Poland.

Bright sunshine and blue skies awaited the party on landing. Tour guide Anna Kaiser pointed out various places of interest to the group on the coach to the Batory Hotel.

Day two saw the sun shine again with temperatures nearing 20 degrees, and that afternoon the pupils went to Auschwitz.

Almost two hours were spent visiting the buildings holding the personal possessions of the victims of the Holocaust, culminating in the visit to the gas chamber and crematorium.

The group then made the short journey to Auschwitz-Birkenau to see the sanitation blocks and living quarters, before walking along the rail track to the memorial and ruins of the gas chambers and crematoria.

Schoolchildren from Israel were holding their own service at the memorial. Their singing, as darkness fell, was extremely haunting and emotional.
