Hundreds flock to gala day for plenty of fun in the sun

More than 800 people thronged to Bishopbriggs '¨Gala Day to soak up the '¨sunshine during a fun-filled day of activities.

The event took place at the Fort Theatre, organised by 
the local community council, who hailed it as one of the 
best ever.

The successful event 
featured all the traditioinal gala activities, including the crowning of the Gala Queen Lauren Waugh, with her attendants Freya Togher and Eilidh Chisholm.

All three are pupils at Balmuildy Primary School in Bishopbriggs.

There was live music and a range of activities including beat the goalie, a bouncy castle and inflatable slide, face painting and a hugely popular 
puppet show.

A petting zoo was also a big hit with the children, featuring animals from ducks 
and rabbits to snakes and a 
tarantula!

Brackenbrae House 
kindly set up a tea room 
during the day, a welcome 
break for thirsty visitors on the day.

Sue Anderson, a member of the gala committee said: “There were so many people here this year, much more than last year.

“The gala day was a huge success and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who turned out to make it such a great day.

“We were very lucky with the weather, it was terrific.”

Dougie Hall of Cadder Freestone did the honours of crowning the Gala Queen.

Another VIP guest was newly elected MSP for Strathkelvin and Bearsden Rona Mackay.

She said: ““It was a great family fun day with something for everyone and very well-organised.

“Even the sun shone but I’m not sure how much the 
organisers had to do with that!

“The Gala Queen and 
princesses carried out their regal duties beautifully and looked lovely – well done to everyone involved.”

The date for your diary for Kirkintilloch Gala Day is Saturday, June 11 from 12-4pm.

This follows a week of activities, including Praise in the Park at Peel Park on Sunday, June 5.

As well as Praise in the Park, Kirkintilloch’s Gala Week of entertainment included trials for Kirkintilloch’s Got Talent! on Monday and the Olympians School Sports at Merkland which takes place tomorrow (Thursday, June 9) from 6.30pm.

The gala day parade leaves Barleybank Car Park at 12pm on Saturday, June 11, heading to Woodhead Park, where a song and dance factory will top the bill.

There will also be a fun fair, stalls and snack bars.

Preparations are also well in hand for Kirkintilloch Canal Festival from August 15-21.
