Improvement workis poised to start

IMPROVEMENT works worth nearly a quarter of a million pounds to enhance Kilsyth town centre and conservation area are set to get under way on January 9.

Contractor Stewart Landscapes has been appointed to carry out the enhancement programme, which will cost a total of £245,000.

The initial plans were put to Kilsyth Community Council for comment several months ago but have now been approved.

The North Lanarkshire Council project is designed to lift the mood of the town centre and ensure all visitors are given a lasting impression of what Kilsyth has to offer.

New signs highlighting the entrance to the town centre and conservation area are to be erected.

Information boards detailing local walking routes and displaying a map of the town will be sited in the car parks on Airdrie Road and King Street, and also at Old Man’s Rest, at the junction of Burnbank Terrace and Kingston Road.

The footpath connecting Airdrie Road and Market Close will be widened and the existing railings repositioned.

The path on Market Close will also be widened, and paved in a similar way to Main Street.

Steps at the end of Burnbank Terrace are to be converted to a ramp to improve access for disabled people and parents with buggies.

King Street car park is to be given a complete overhaul, with trees being planted and two new parking bays created.

Councillor James Coyle, convener of planning and transportation, said: “Kilsyth has a very attractive town centre and these works are designed to enhance the area further and encourage more people to visit and shop there.

“The work will improve access to the town for people with a disability, and it is intended to encourage visitors into the town on foot or by public transport instead of travelling by car to other locations outwith the town.

“We have worked closely with the local community in developing these plans, and we believe they will enhance the character and amenity of Kilsyth.”
