Inspectors looking for improvements from Bishopbriggs secure unit

St Mary’s Kenmure, in Bishopbriggs, was forced to close in March 2008 after extensive damage was done during a major disturbance.

It reopened six months later after a £500,000 revamp.

Education inspectors visited the unit in November last year. Their report, published last week, praised staff for their “commitment to young people’s care and welfare”.

The HMIE report also praised the unit for its “supporting and caring atmosphere”, “the positive relationships between staff and young people” and the “young people’s success in gaining national qualifications”.

But it wasn’t all good news, with St Mary’s being classed as “weak” for both its curriculum and the way young people improve themselves through self-evaluation.

The inspectors concluded: “We are satisfied with the overall quality of provision.

“With support from the board of directors, the school will be able to make the necessary improvements.

“Our lead inspector, along with the board of directors, will discuss the most appropriate support in order to build capacity for improvement and will maintain contact to monitor progress.

“Parents will be informed of the extent to which the school has improved.”

Actions already agreed include implementing Curriculum for Excellence to ensure young people reach their potential.
