The Peter Buchanan Award for Personal Endeavour will recognise a young person who has, through exceptional determination and effort, overcome significant challenges in their life.

Peter joined the council in 2009 as project officer for the Positive Alternatives scheme. He remained in post until his unexpected death at the age of 56, in July 2011.

A spokesperson said: “He was truly inspirational to our most challenging young people – achieving much through his entrepreneurial leadership of Positive Alternatives.”

Award nominees must be between 13 and 19-years-old and live, or attend secondary school, in East Dunbartonshire. Friends, family members or professionals can make nominations.

Sandy McGarvey, head of integrated support – community services, said: “Peter had the capacity, where others had failed, to inspire young people to achieve more in their future by going on to further education, training and employment.

“This can sometimes be a most difficult time for these young people, but with Peter’s determination and support for each and every one of them, they had the best opportunity to continue to grow and achieve throughout their lives.”
