It’s Biggar’s Vintage Rally this weekend

Veteran and vintage cars, lorries and buses from the turn of the last century and classic cars up to 1980 will be on display, with their enthusiastic owners happy to talk about them.

Agricultural equipment and vintage tractors will be displayed and there will also be a range of stalls and sales of the famous autojumble in Biggar Farmers’ Showfield in Edinburgh Road.

“It is always a busy day and very popular,” said Foundation chairman Brian Craigie.

“We usually have about 30 Albion lorries and cars.

”Last year we had an A6, a 1916 Albion. We have some pretty rare vehicles coming along.”

Various other car clubs also make a point of attending the Biggar Rally.

The showground is always packed with visitors and this year there is even more reason to hope for a good turn out.

The Albion Museum in Biggar – celebrating the company because the founder came from the town – has the chance to expand this year.

It hopes to buy Gladstone Court Museum, vacated by Biggar Museum Trust which last month opened its new museum further along the High Street.

The current Albion Museum is at the back of the now closed Gladstone Court.

The Albion Foundation has until the end of October to raise £100,000 to buy the premises.

It has raised £80,000 already and will have a stall at the rally to help bring in even more money.

“We are pretty close,” said Brian, “but we need more to get to our final target and for kitting it out.

“Biggar Rally is our main source of funding.”

The Foundation is also seeking new blood.

“Some of our volunteers have been with us for 40 years, and we could use some more,” added Brian.

The event starts at 10am on Sunday. Admission is £8 for adults, £5 concessions.

The regular run, with the stately old vehicles driving a loop through the picturesque Clydesdale back roads, has been postponed and won’t be taking place this year but the veteran, vintage and classic vehicles will still turn heads as they drive into Biggar to take their place in the showfield.
