But for families whose lives have revolved around these buildings the transformation brings mixed emotions.

This is because demolition of the remaining flats at 3-20 Windy Yetts and 7-10 Sunnyhill will finally end the historic association with Twechar’s former coal mine, which dates to the colliery’s heyday in the 1860’s.

However in 2012 councillors noted that elderly and disabled people were still living in what are sub-standard homes by today’s standards.

The modernisation programme, involving social renting and affordable housing, is reckoned a dramatic improvement for the better.

Places for People and Castlerock Edinvar Housing Association have been developing new houses in Twechar over the last three years, and the 24 flats to be demolished are part of the last phase.

East Dunbartonshire Council has been moving tenants out of the properties in preparation for the demolition and new build programme.

The remaining four tenants are preparing to into one of the new homes to be built by Places for People during the summer.

There will be a mixture of one, two and three bedroom properties for social rent, shared equity and outright sale.

Neighbour Councillor Ashay Ghai, who is neigbourhood services convener, said: “These sites have served tenants well over the years but have now come to the end of their useful lives.

“I am very pleased the two areas will now be cleared to make way for future development and much needed Council housing.

“It’s the end of an era in one respect, but an exciting beginning too, which will bring regeneration to Twechar.”

The buildings being demolished were “modern” in their time, replacing Victorian “miners’ row” cottages.
