Japan comes calling

A PROFESSIONAL wrestler from Giffnock has been handed a unique opportunity to tour Japan.

The country is generally considered to be the industry’s mecca and is where many of the wrestling world’s top dogs honed their skills.

Now, 23-year-old Mark Coffey will follow in the footsteps of some of the best in the game by heading to Asia for a three month tour with the Zero1 promotion.

Mark earned the honour after taking part in Zero1′’s European challenge, where he took his chance to impress company officials.

While on the tour, Mark Coffey hopes to hone his skills and pave the way for an eventual career in one of the big time American promotions such as World Wrestling Entertainment or TNA wrestling.

The former St Aloysius’ pupil came up the ranks in Scottish industry alongside his brother Joe, a former GHA first XV rugby player who previously toured Japan — becoming one of the few Scottish wrestlers to do so.

He has already emerged on WWE’s radar, wrestling several trial matches for the company.

Before he departs however, the wrestling star has unfinished business and will appear at Barrhead sports centre on March 30 for Premier British Wrestling.

His opponent that day will be fellow Scottish starlet Noam Dar, who has broken out all over Europe in the last 18 months, wrestling against some of the biggest names in wrestling such as AJ Styles and John Morrison.

Mark told The Extra: “Noam Dar is undoubtedly one of the most experienced, well travelled wrestlers in the uk scene today, and at the age of 19, this is a testament to how good he is.

“I know I will definitely have my work cut out for me.”

Promoter Ross Watson added: “I am really looking forward to the show as it’s always a good turnout in Barrhead and the atmosphere is always great.

“These two young lads are, without a doubt, two of Scotlands finest young wrestlers.”
