A KILSYTH church which was built shortly after its original building burned to the ground hopes the community will come together to help celebrate its jubilee.

Kilsyth Church of God, on Parkburn Road, is gearing up to celebrate 50 years in its current location with a number of special events.

But the church actually started life in the town as early as June 12, 1897, with its congregation meeting in the Westport Hall.

The Westport Hall, however, was destroyed by a fire in October 1961 although planning permission had already been gained to build a new church at the current site.

The tragic accident brought together the community, and the congregation worked hard with a contractor to get the building ready for its official opening on Saturday, December 15, 1962.

The Reverend Mike Preston, who started his work with the independent, Elim affiliated church at the start of this year, admits he has been impressed by the congregation in Kilsyth.

He said: “The congregation are hard working. They love life and there is a real sense of care for the community.”
