Six years beforehand, Robert – a retired metallurgist for British Steel – had cycled the canal route with son-in-law David Burnett who lives in England, to raise funds for CACE.

David and Robert’s daughter Bev were telling their son Josh all about the fundraising drive and the 10-year-old decided that he too would like to undertake the same route for charity as a means of paying tribute to his grandfather.

This time the charity to benefit is the Scottish wing of the British Lung Foundation and Josh has raised his £500 target through sponsorship from generous family and friends on both sides of the border

Josh’s grandmother, Lillian Forbes, said: “They set off at 10.30am and arrived in Bowling at 5.45pm.

“It was a very emotional day.”
