Pupils from Castlehill Primary and St Andrew’s Primary in Bearsden are the latest to take part in East Dunbartonshire Council’s Junior Warden Scheme.

Over the last few weeks, P6/7 pupils from both schools have been taking part in classroom lessons and external activities to learn about community safety and what it means to them and their families.

As part of the Junior Warden scheme a team of fire officers from Milngavie Fire Station brought an appliance along to the school and discussed fire safety with the children.

Pupils also enjoyed talks from local community police officers and the council’s young persons’ education and prevention officer on drugs and alcohol awareness, as well as an input from the Mugdock Rangers.

Council leader Rhondda Geekie met the young people at a special event in St Andrew’s Primary School and heard how they had enjoyed taking part.

She presented them all with certificates to recognise their hard work.

Speaking afterwards, Councillor Geekie said: “This is a great scheme that aims to help pupils understand the impact that antisocial behaviour can have on the area and people around them.

“It gives them an opportunity to build important positive relationships with local residents and service providers.

“Making these links between schools, the council and agencies like Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is vital in building respect.”

She added: “By learning more about their local environment, the hope is that they will want to protect and preserve it and choose to make a positive contribution to their community.”

During the scheme, the pupils kept notebooks detailing what they learned. At the special event, Mirren and Lana from St. Andrew’s Primary were presented with £10 gift vouchers as their notebooks were judged to be the best.

The event was attended by local elected members, the council’s community wardens, Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
