Keep a close eye on purses and wallets

Shoppers in busy town centres across Central Scotland are being warned to keep a close eye on purses and wallets after three elderley women were victims of purse snatchers in the space of two hours yesterday (Wednesday).

The three incidents all happened in the Thistle Centre in Stirling over the busy lunchtime period and police believe the same person, or group of people, were to blame for the thefts.

Inspector Donna Bryans said: “All the victims had purses taken from their bags, in some cases, from zipped bags or handbags. These thefts can take place when people are distracted, or are bumped in to by the thieves, and are most common in shops which are busy and have limited space between display shelves.

“An easy way to deter this type of theft is to put small bells on the purse, as these will chime when moved, and it deters the thief or warns the victim that someone is attempting to steal from them.

“These bells are very cheap to buy, and can also be supplied free of charge by Police Scotland.They can be obtained from your local community officers.
